Chords of Comfort
Today's Treasure: "Whenever the spirit of God came upon Saul, David would take his harp and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him" (1Sam 16:23)
Read 1 Samuel 16: 13 - 23
Verses 13 and 14 tell of two contrasting activities of the Holy Spirit. Below describe the two activities of the Spirit and the results that came from them
The Spirit of the Lord came to David in power and it departed from Saul. An evil spirit tormented Saul
How did David come into Saul's service?
The house servant mentioned that there was a harpist that may bring him comfort. David was chosen to leave the pastures to ease the evil spirit tormenting Saul.
What was David's first position under Saul's authority...
servant to play the harp and then armor bearer
In the margin list every description of David in verse 18
David is a brave man and warrior, he speaks well, is fine looking, a fine harpist and the Lord is with him.
What effect did David's music have on the tormented king?
The evil spirit left and Saul felt better
It is important that Beth notes the Holy Spirit relationship with people prior to Calvary vs. after Calvary
Before Calvary, the Holy Spirit worked to empower specific types of service rather than bring new relationship with God through Salvation. In the Old Testament, less than 100 people were ever characterized by the Holy Spirit being in or on them. Now, His Spirit lives in all believers.
Read John 14: 16 - 17
This assures u that the Holy Spirit is with us forever. The Holy Spirit will be in us and live with us
Have you ever feared that you might have done something to make the Holy Spirit depart from you?
Yes
Read Romans 8: 38 - 39 How do these verses encourage you toward security in your relationship to God through Jesus Christ?
NOTHING can separate us from the love of God that is in Jesus Christ our Lord
Saul continued to be king after David's anointing. This just marked the end of the power and favor of God on him. God had to thoroughly prepare David for his role as king before he was crowned. God moved David into the service of King Saul for a reason.
Think back on the most memorable time in your life when you were tormented by fear. Describe the situation...
Several years ago, two of our very dear friends reached out to us with an amazing gift to help us recover from the trauma of Scott and Tina's accident. They invited us on a once in a lifetime trip to Hawaii. Chad had won the trip for four, and they wanted us to join them. All expenses would be paid, first class airfare, excursions, food allowance and amazing place on the beach!!! Who in their right mind would turn this down. I was petrified to go on a flight that long and leave my children because I had just experienced Jackson and Avery losing their parents. I just couldn't convince myself that I would be returning to them safely. So, we sent our friends without us (who, of course, returned safely). I allowed fear to take that opportunity away from my husband and I.
Look carefully at 1 Samuel 16: 18. What is the next piece of information we learn about David after we are told that he played the harp?
That he is a brave man and warrior
Do you think you possess both qualities of tenderness and strength?
I think every woman has both of these attributes. That's what makes us so beautiful...right ladies?
We are born into a society that expects us to be tender, but we have to be so strong in order to maintain the many roles we must learn to "play" as we grow older. We have so many expectations with each stage of our lives. We are children=students=friends=wife=mother=new friends=colleagues=sprititual friends, and the list goes on and on. You must be strong and tender to accomplish these tasks in your life!!!
Briefly describe a man/woman that describes both characteristics?
My husband is an amazing person when it comes to this. He is so tender when it comes to the boys and me. He constantly reassures me of his love in such sweet ways, and he is an amazing "hands on" father. He hugs and loves on our children more than any father I have ever seen. He constantly showers them with praise. But, he is also very strong (physically and emotionally). He is a rock when we need someone to stand up and take charge in our family.
Thank you all for joining in today....I love you!!!
My first chemo treatment is tomorrow!!! Please pray for a safe trip and praise God that we are finally going to start kicking some cancer booty!!!!
One more thing, I have been e-mailed by a man named Bill Rich that wants to share in our prayers. He has been diagnosed with leukemia. He had three small children and a wonderful wife. He is inspired by what we are doing here prayer wise. Can we please include him in our daily prayers!!!
love you all
