I apologize that we are off with the time, but we will catch up shortly!!!!
Day 3
Today's Treasure
"The Lord said to Samuel, 'Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart'" (1 Sam. 16:7)
Read 1 Samuel 16: 1 - 13
What profound assignment did God give the prophet Samuel in verse 1?
To fill his horn with oil to anoint the new king
Please take time to read this entire passage. It is so uplifting to know that our Father looks into our hearts and knows us so personally!!!
Why was Samuel initially reluctant to go to Bethlehem?
He was afraid Saul would kill him
Samuel initially assumed God's choice was Eliab, Jesse's oldest son. Based on God's response to Samuel, why do you think Samuel chose Eliab?
His outward appearance seemed like that of a king. He was strong looking in stature
When Samuel asked Jesse if he had any other sons, Jesse answered, "There is still the youngest...but he is tending the sheep." What other words come to your mind when you think of the word 'tending'?
taking care of/watching over
Ruddy and handsome can best be used to describe Jesse's youngest son
Write the Lord's profound commandment to Samuel in verse 12:
Rise and anoint him: he is the one
How did the Spirit of God manifest Himself in the life of David from the time He came upon him?
In power
It is also important to note that in Acts 1:8 we are given the promise, 'you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you'.
Beth points out that David arrived to his "anointing" completely unaware of what was in store for him. He was not the obvious choice, but he was God's choice.
Can you think of a time when God's obvious choice for you did not make sense based on outward appearances?
This is an easy one for me to come up with. When I met my husband, I fell in love with him immediately. What was not to love. He was kind and gentle, but on top of that....he was a very fine looking man. Honestly, I have to tell you that I couldn't believe he was asking me out. I just felt that it would never work because he seemed way "out of my means". I knew he was very popular in school. He was a football and baseball hero in his hometown, and he had the brains to go along with the rest of the package. Why me? Why would he choose me? I remember when he told me he was in love with me, I felt in my heart that he was "the one". Yet, I often remember wondering if people looked on us like this mismatched couple. Brian has proven to be exactly what God picked out for me. He is the most loving, amazing husband I could ever dream of having. He is faithful to me beyond belief and goes out of his way to shower me with love. I never have to wonder where he stands...but I do wonder (based on outward appearance) how it ever came to be!!!!
The genealogy of Christ
Read Ruth 4: 13 - 17
Ruth is David's great grandmother
The genealogy of Christ is listed in Matthew 1: 1 - 17
In verse 1, Christ is given the title of the son of David and the son of Abraham
Both David and Christ are descendants of the Tribe of Judah
How do you respond to the fact that the only perfect person on Christ's genealogy is Christ?
It gives me hope
What evidences do you see in these verses to refute the following sentence: God called David in spite of the fact that he was a common shepherd?
God chose him because he was a common shepherd and he knew how to lead and how to protect. He knew how to love and care for the ones he led
What are a few of your occupational skills?
I am a wife and a mom...
I know how to nurture and love. I know how to embrace
Have you ever felt that your occupational skills were useless in areas of service to God?
Yes
Can you think of ways God can use or has used you because of your skills and not just in spite of them?
God designed me to care for others...I love people. I love loving people. He has also used me with them children. There have been times when I have felt "trapped" in children's ministry because I felt that was all I was equipped to do.
Fill in the following blank from 1 Samuel 16:13
"So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came upon David in power."
I love you all so much
