Week 9 - Day 2

June 26, 2008
Day 2 / Week 9
Unfinished Business

Today's Treasure: 2 Samuel 21: 14

"They buried the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan in the tomb of Saul's father Kish, at Zela in Benjamin, and did everything the king commanded. After that, God answered prayer in behalf of the land"

Read 2 Samuel 20: 1 – 26. Use your imagination for a moment as you consider Sheba, son of Bicri. Describe the kind of man who could incite an army of men to follow him and desert their king.

A: In my opinion, it would have to be a strong, confident individual that was very charismatic.

Why did Joab kill Amasa?

A: David had given Amasa Joab's position.

Why did Amasa's body have to be moved?

A: The soldiers were stopping at his body and not moving forward with Joab

How close did Joab's army come to besieging the entire city of Abeh Beth Maacah in order to seize Sheba?

A: They had him backed into the walls and were about to take over

How did the woman who confronted Joab prove herself?

A: She spoke of the mother of Israel and convinced Joab to retreat if they delivered Sheba out of the city

Another fact makes Joab's actions towards Amasa considerably more heinous. Read 1 Chronicles 2: 16 – 17 carefully. What was the relationship between Amasa and Joab?

A: They were cousins

Why do you think people are unwilling to get involved when they see someone in need or when they witness a crime?

A: They do not want to risk their own lives. They do not have the compassion of Christ

Have you known of a situation where someone was in trouble and no one came to the person's aid?

A: I cannot say that I have actually witnessed someone being attacked or helplessly awaiting help, but I do know that people often just stand and watch.

It is important for us to recognize how the woman that confronted Joab made a difference for her city. She was not looking for recognition. She simply wanted to stand up for her beliefs. She was not willing to just stand by and watch as her city was destroyed. Do you often wonder how much better our world would be if more people would stand firm for their beliefs? Do you know someone who risked involvement in a community need or another's personal need and made a significant difference? Think back on your feelings about that person when they were willing to do so.

Read 2 Samuel 21: 1 – 14

Why did famine fall on the land for three years?

A: Saul had put the Gibeonites to death

What did God do after recompense was paid to the Gibeonites and David had the bones of Saul and Jonathan moved to the tomb of his father (v 14)?

A: God answered prayer on behalf of the land

Skim Joshua 9: 1 – 21. What might be the moral of this story?

A: Inquire with God when you feel you might be deceived.

Do you have a vow to God that you feel could use a fresh dose of recommitment? If so, write a prayer of commitment to God. Ask His help in fulfilling your vow!!!
