Hi, all!!! Baby, it's cold outside!!! Just a little joke referring to one of my favorite "old" songs!!! The boys and I sing it to each other every year when they play it a lot. I have it on CD, and they like to sing the male part of the song. I can't carry a tune in a bucket, but we have fun with it.
There are two things I want to say before we get started!! Thank you to everyone that has forwarded such warm birthday wishes to me today. Yes, it is my 35th birthday!!! My dad actually had his first outing with me to have lunch. I think it did him well to get out of the house. We had a healthy meal. It's really hard not to splurge on your b-day. Instead of cake, I had a bowl of strawberries and pineapple slices.
The second thing I want to share is a very special prayer request. There is a woman in my church, Edith Thornburg, that is also battling cancer. She is actually a 20 year survivor of ovarian cancer. Her cancer came back and she is now on aggressive chemo. She has decided to go to Duke for a second opinion on treatments on May 5th. I really want to shower her in prayer as she makes this trip and possibly begins treatment there. I want to pray for great results. She is such a caring person, and I count it an honor to pray for her. So, please remember her daily!!!
Now, let's get started!!!
Today's Treasure:
" 'they have credited David with tens of thousands,' Saul thought, 'but me with only thousands. What more can he get but the kingdom?' And from that time on Saul kept a jealous eye on David" (1 Sam. 18: 8 - 9)
In my family, we refer to jealousy as the little green monster. I see it on a daily basis with my two boys, and it breaks my heart. If they only could realize that they each possess such unique amazing qualities that make us love them in such profound ways. The youngest one is always complaining that the oldest beats him to everything. The oldest is always complaining that the youngest gets by with everything. It is never ending. When I think back to all the time I spent being jealous of my siblings and what we put my parents through. I have to wonder how much more fun life would have been if we would have been able to laugh at ourselves. Yet, it is such a serious emotion when it is happening. Even as adults, we are so often guilty of finding things to be jealous of. Why? I will say that it seems to be less and less of a problem for me (thanks to the Holy Spirit). BUT, I cannot tell you that it doesn 't exist. Now, if I can just get my boys to understand that we need to overcome it, my life would be so much more quiet!!!
In 1 Samuel 18: 5 - 16
David performs all of his duties successfully
Saul gave David a high rank in the army
When the women danced and chanted giving David credit for tens of thousands and Saul credit for one thousand, jealousy began to rage in Saul. This became an outward show of emotion when Saul hurl his spear to pin David to the wall. But, David was successful in all that he did because th Lord was with him.
The four emotions I listed from these verses are:
gall, jealousy, anger and fear
Now ladies, did the next question hit home....or did the next question hit home?
I know if Brian was working with a beautiful young woman, the hair would probably stand up on the back of my neck. I know that I would try really hard to embrace the person, but I would make sure that Brian knew his boundaries according to me. That is crazy, considering the person he is. I would just do it to reassure my fears!!!!
Now Brian, on the other hand, would probably not struggle with jealousy of a co-worker as much. He tends to be very complacent with the way his life is at work. However, I can understand why one man would be jealous of an up-and-coming co-worker.
I think Saul was afraid of losing his kingdom to David. This would really mean the end of his life. He was also afraid of David because the Lord was with him.
Now the next question is pretty personal, but I will share. I need to purge the sin anyway. I may as well do it to the world. Sunday, I was feeling a little tired. My boys were wanting to go ride go-carts with some of their friends. So, I asked Brian to take them. They left to go run some errands, and I stayed home. I assumed that they would be gone for a long while, and he would just take them to ride after the errands. In a little while, my youngest one came running out to me crying because they didn't go ride go-carts. Well, before I realized it, I had jumped up and run out fussing at my husband (who was totally innocent). I made it a much bigger deal than it was. He thought he had to be there by a certain time, and so he felt they had missed the chance and came home. When I finished fussing, I felt like a complete jerk!!!! I was ashamed and full of sorrow for this man that has done nothing but st and by my side through thick and thin!!! Boy, am I scum of the earth!!!
In Acts 5: 17 - 18
The apostles were arrested and put in jail as a result of jealousy An angel of the Lord opened the doors and brought them out. Paul and Barnabas were sent away and could not teach the gentile. The Jews were jealous. Despite all of this, The Word of the Lord spread through the whole region. Can we say: THANK YOU JESUS!!!!
1 Corinthians 3:3 says jealousy is characteristic of worldly behavior
The only right kind of jealousy is godly jealousy
Exodus 20:5 says God is a jealous God if we bow down and worship others
Joel 2:18
"The Lord will be jealous for his land and take pity on his people."
Zechariah 1:14
"This is what the Lord Almighty says, I am very jealous for Jerusalem and Zion."
Zechariah 8:2
"This is what the Lord Almighty says, I am very jealous for Zion. I am burning with jealousy for her."
2 Corinthians 11:2
"I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy"
1 Samuel 18: 17 - 30
Saul was pleased to have his daughter love David because he thought David would be distracted by his passion, and this would lead to him falling to the Philistines
Saul became even more afraid once he realized his daughter really loved David because he was afraid of the power that would come to David.
I love you all so much
Thank you for sharing my birthday with me
Tiff
